Research Interests:

My research interests are generally in the analysis and application of differential equations. Normally, I enjoy applying a mix of analytical and numerical approaches. Recently, I have been trying to learn a bit about stochastic processes.

Current Activity

  • PK-PD modelling of Aurora kinase activity in the spindle assembly checkpoint

  • Complex behaviour in microbial populations:

form and function of fungal networks

    biofilm formation

    swimming patterns of zoospores

  • Reaction-diffusion equations

wave fronts in near-degenerate bistable systems

    mixed hyperbolic-parabolic systems

    Other Recent Interests

  • Time-scale analysis (calculus on measure chains)
  • Non-linear analysis/bifurcation theory
  • Non-local differential equations
  • Enzyme catalysed biochemical reactions

Recent PhD students: Rui Xu, Modelling and analysis of stage-strutured population dynamics; Niall Dodds, Non-local differential equations; Michael Smith (Joint with Dr Jonathan Kobine, Civil Engineering), Asymmetric Tuned Liquid Column Dampers. Andrew Bowen (Joint with Prof. G.M. Gadd, Division of Environmental and Applied Biology) Mathematical modelling of fungal growth and biogeochemical activity in the soil environment

PhD opportunities are availiable in all of the above areas - please contact me for further details.
